BEYOND THE MARKET

reimagining the food system in Kluang, Johor,

enhancing the city through food tourism

The Current Experience: Food Space Typologies

Food can be found in many forms and across different stages of the experiential food system. To understand the site's capacity to support Food Tourism, these spaces had to be categorised and studied.

Strong Points and Observations

This potentially leads to Food Contamination, Wastage, and Higher Carbon Emissions from vehicles.

There is a great distance between Food Production and Food Consumption, both physically and metaphorically.

Market: A Point of Exchange

Experience within a typical Market

Creation of various Social Clusters

Community Landscape Spaces

This promotes an efficient division of programmes across the site, emphasising the landscape's qualities and providing direct access to the natural landscape spaces.

"Market" as an Experience: Kluang Market

Reworking the physical and metaphorical format of the market opens up opportunities for flexible spaces and programmes.

The layout remains organised and simple, ensuring locals can easily locate their favourite stores. Storeowners now have ample storage and display spaces for their products and even have areas for them to rest after the morning rush.

Programmes Across the Day

Across the City...

Boosting Tourism and Food Distribution Services

The food system experience at the market continues through the Mengkibol River, which runs through the city. Currently mono-functional, the revamped river would be re-purposed to alleviate the strain on food distribution systems, providing an alternative to busy roads during the day.

As visitors hop on the river experience, they not only get to enjoy Kluang's views, lifestyle, and culture through the stories of locals, but also have the opportunity to observe how food travels across the city.
